Should Schools Ban Homework? What do you think?

According to Britannica ProCon.org, students who had homework outperformed 69% of the students who didn’t have homework on standardized tests and grades. Debates about having or not having homework have been going on for years now, but we still don’t have a convincing aspect on the argument. There are pros and cons on both sides, but everyone has their own opinion. But, looking at the benefits of homework, schools shouldn’t ban it.

Apart from helping in normal tests and quizzes in school, does homework also help in achieving more credits for college? “Research by the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) concluded that increased homework led to better GPAs and higher probability of college attendance for high school boys. In fact, boys who attended college did more than three hours of additional homework per week in high school.” (ProCon.org) This shows how increased homework benefited high school students in making sure that they are eligible for college. Also, the increase of homework also prepared them for more pressure of studies and homework in college. If they didn’t have a decent amount of homework in high school, then it would have been hard for them to tackle the amount in college.

The time duration of a homework assignment also matters in a student’s growth and development. ProCon.org says, “Research published in the High School Journal indicates that students who spent between 31 and 90 minutes each day on homework ‘scored about 40 points higher on the SAT-Mathematics subtest than their peers, who reported spending no time on homework each day, on average.’” This shows that students who were focused or who were doing their homework for a long time improved their grades to an extent. This huge amount of growth happened just because of homework, which means that students do not require to study extra on a night before a test since their skills can be sharpened just by doing homework and nothing else.

Some people say that homework causes students to stress and not sleep well on school nights. Well, this stress can be illuminated just by following time management. According to Oxford Learning also, we should, “Practice good time management. When it’s time to get to work on homework assignments, make sure your child is focused on the task at hand. Remove distractions like cell phones or television so your child can complete his or her homework and stay on schedule.” This means that homework stress can be illuminated just by following a strict schedule and getting rid of distractions which can later “make” homework a stress. This can also cause children to get a good sleep since they completed everything on time.

Taking the above reasons into consideration, schools should strictly go against banning homework, since it can ruin the growth and development of students. What say, if you were a teacher, would homework be banned in your classroom?

  2. Very good write up Srijan. I too believe giving little homework to students enhances their performance. Homework makes students revise the topic once again and understand it .
